Mak Ashwood

Mak grabbed her ringing phone from the couch seat beside her. It was Samuel.

“Hello,” she answered, looking away from the screen for the first time in hours.

“Good news. They’re on their way back to London. They’ll touch down in a few hours. James is stable, but he has multiple wounds that need treatment.”

He’s alive. Mak closed her eyes in relief.

Samuel, likely misunderstanding her silence, continued, “Let’s focus on the positive—he’s alive and he’ll make a fine recovery in time.”

“Thank you, Samuel,” she said.

“Mak . . . there are a few unexpected guests returning with them. And they’re going to be taken to the townhouse until we can figure out what to do from there.”

Mak’s eyebrows creased together.

“Eric’s wife, Marianne, and her daughter are with them,” Samuel said cautiously.

“What?”

“I know, I know, but it looks like our first impressions of her were incorrect,” Samuel said.

Aiding Eric to hold captive and drug my sister was an incorrect assumption?

Mak opened her mouth to speak, but Samuel got in first. “Marianne has very useful information, information that is going to resolve your case, and then she’s agreed to help us find Eric again so we can end this once and for all.”

“She injected my sister with heroin, Samuel,” she said through clenched teeth.

“And she also helped James escape. Look, I’m not excusing what she did—at all—and none of us are particularly thrilled about having her with us. But James promised her protection in trade for helping him escape, and until he’s awake and can tell his side of the story, she’s with us.”

Mak blew out an exasperated breath.

“Okay,” she said, lost for words. James had a lot of talking to do, on many fronts.

“One more thing you should know . . .” Samuel said. “Her daughter’s name is Makaela.”

Mak stilled—Samuel’s words took a moment to settle in. Eric named his daughter after me? It was a sickening thought.

“It’s disturbing on many levels,” Samuel said.

Mak shouldn’t have been surprised by anything Eric did anymore, but that caught her by surprise. She couldn’t formulate a response to Samuel.

“Try and get some rest, Mak. It’ll be a few hours before they land,” Samuel said.

Samuel had been the only one she’d communicated with since Deacon and Cami left, and she was grateful he hadn’t turned off the screens—because she knew he could’ve and there wouldn’t have been anything she could’ve done about it.

“I will,” Mak said eventually, her mind still reeling. She pushed aside Samuel’s new information. She didn’t want to think about Eric anymore. She just wanted to see James. Every time his heart rate spiked, she feared she’d never see him again.

“Does it get any easier, Samuel? Knowing they’re going on a mission and might not come out alive?” Mak asked.

“No, it doesn’t. Every day we spend together we grow closer, and so every time they risk their lives it gets harder. But I also know it’s who they are. They fight for each other—and for the people they care about—and I love that about them,” he said.
